White day in japan
Today is White day, the day of love in japan. However with all the devastation flowers and chocolates will have to wait.
We just had a 6.2 a earthquake which woke us. We are not expecting any damage or tsunami.
Here you can see the yen against the dollar over the week.
Here against the pound.
And against the euro.
We are told to save power and power outages will stop.
We haven't left the house since the quake on Friday. I left briefly for work on Saturday but soon returned home.
We may have to leave today for supplies.

Tsunami warning
Miagi prefecture is expecting a tsunami.
People of sendai and Miagi prefecture should evacuate to higher ground.

Earthquake update
Today the tsunami warnings have been lowered but a new threat is upon us.
The Fukushima power plant is facing melt down in number 1 and number 3 of it's reactors.
There has been a 20km evacuation zone put in place.
People are advised to evacuate and those further out should remain indoors and turn all fans off.
Here is my location from the reactor. The blue dot is me and the red is the reactor. Just east of the blue dot you can see Sendai. The city devastated by the tsunami.
We are storing water in bottles and keeping instant ramen just in case. At night we put the tv face down on the floor and in the day we stay glued to the rolling news.
iPhone has an app called Nhk live. You can watch live rolling news in English there.

Earthquake advice
If anyone is trying to contact someone on the west coast I recommend using skype or an Ip phone.
Public phones are now free in japan so use those as mobile phones are not great in all areas yet.
Also try here if you want to locate someone.

Earthquake in Japan!
Yesterday was Japan's biggest earthquake.
I was working in Tendo Yamagata just 1 hour and 30 mins from Sendai.
It was around 14:00 and I was in class teaching when everything began to shake.
People were screaming in the street and we stood outside our building in the snow. A bus was waiting at the bus stop, shaking, full of people. The buildings were shaking too as if they were made of jelly. The rattling was so loud and it was difficult to stand up.
We waited outside in the cold for about an hour until all the shocks had subsided. The city was out of power and signal lights ceased to work. Cars crashed outside the school and sirens of ambulances, police and fire brigade filled the air.
The phone network failed although data was up. I got skype online and my coworker was able to call his family and I turned on my wifi hotspot so my boss could use internet on her laptop. The flash came in handy too since we had no power it worked as a torch.
I couldn't contact Yuuri since she was working at the Richmond hotel in Yamagata and had to stay to help guests. I was worried but told to go home. My home was fine and nothing had fallen off much, my new LED TV was still standing so I was relieved. I secured everything I could and went back out to try the shops for supplies. Nothing. Everything was closed.
Trains had stopped and traffic was erratic. The snow was coming down heavy so I decided best to stay home.
People were in their cars keeping warm. We had no electric but gas and water was on.
As night drew near the town with no lights soon went dark and cold. I struggled to move around my own apartment. I put on as many clothes as I could and kept trying to reach Yuuri.
Just after 21:00 Yuuri said she was coming home by taxi. It was good to see her and we quickly went to bed to keep warm.
Today I woke up and batteries were starting to get low on our phones. Luckily I had been using a backup battery charger but now it had depleted. Softbank network was completely down too and nothing on the phones worked. I got up at 9:00 and it was cold. I made Yuuri a hot chocolate and boiled a pot of water to use to get washed in.
Work was closed but I saw people in the supermarket so I got some instant ramen and some coffee. I got some heat packs too just in case. the supermarket was dark and the cash machines were all offline. The queues were astronomical and I got back at about 11:00 to find the power back on. I got the heating on and put on the news.
Ishinomaki, where I was going to work instead of Tendo was destroyed. The city of Hachinohe were I used to visit and take my parents had been washed away and Sendai were I was out shopping the week before was devastated. Figures are coming in as over 1000 people dead.
Right now the nuclear reactor in Fukushima, a few hours south, is venting radiation. We have been told to stay home and be prepared for more tremors and power outages. It is now nearly 23:00 and we are feeling tremors. The phone network is patchy but up for now.
Yuuri has got bottles of fresh water saved and she has made food for us tomorrow. The radiation is going to blow over Japan but I think we will be all right.

England, No job.......Back to Japan!
So now I'm in England I have no job and neither does my wife. I was hoping to get an interview with JET but I never did. (I assume it's because I have prior experience of Japan and I believe JET want to introduce Japan to people).
Fortunately in Taiwan I contacted a Tohoku (northern Japan) based school called James English School. They told me they liked me but they didn't have any vacancies. I kept in contact through my travels through emails, at least once a month.
While in England it was my wife's birthday so I took her to see Rome. We had 4 nights in the beautiful city and enjoyed it immensely. During the trip I was asked by James (James the company not the person) to do an interview. I asked them to hold it a few days until I got to England and they did. I had the interview over skype in the early hours of the morning and was offered the job in Ishinomaki just north of Sendai on the coast of Japan.
(Today I heard on the news that Ishinomaki was been destroyed by Tsunami which worries me)
The follow up interview I was offered Tendo in Yamagata instead because someone else really wanted Ishinomaki due to already living in the city. I decided on Tendo to the disappointment of my wife although after the news she seems more upbeat about Tendo now.
(more on that later)
I got the job and left England shortly after. When I got to Narita I took a shower and got the train to Sendai so I could sign my contract. Yuuri's sister studies at Yamagata Tohoku University so we crashed at her place until the next night when I could travel up to Tendo.
I quickly got set up and viewed a nice place and got settled soon as possible. James didn't take care of any of my paperwork but my wife could do most of it. It was a lot of work for her and I am thankful for her hard work, I don't know what I'd do without her.
James didn't give me any training but maybe that's ok I know what I am doing and a trainer viewed my classes. They seem more relaxed than AEON. The variety is good too, sometimes I work in Tendo, on Tuesdays I am in Yamagata and once I was in a hotel doing a seminar in Sendai all in my first month. I also do lessons in the community centre at the end of the road.
Tendo is a small town so rent is cheap. James don't help with rent but I found a place that was the same price as I was in in Aomori but huge in comparison. We don't get many students either and so most classes are at companies like 3M, Panasonic, Yamagata airport, etc.
It has proven to be an easy going and flexible job where I can be a good teacher.
I do like some formal things such as wearing a tie and cuff links and I have made name tags for my department. Maybe I've been at Aeon too long but I think it works.
